#79 – 3 Characteristics of a Successful Entrepreneur
Listen to The Steven de Cuba Podcast:
Here’s the biggest mistake most entrepreneur make in their business:
They spend a lot of time in their business being productive, but not profitable.
They spend the first 3 to 6 months of their business, trying to have that perfect website, with that perfect logo and those perfect branding colors, only to realize that none of these things are the main reason why someone would invest in their business.
Every successful entrepreneur that’s not about being productive, it’s about being profitable.
And if you don’t have a sales strategy in your business, how much longer do you think you can wing that?
Every successful entrepreneur has adopted different characteristics that has helped them grow their business.
Today, I want to share some of the things that I’ve learned from my mentors, what I’ve applied and what I’ve seen has helped my clients get better results.
3 characteristics of a successful entrepreneur
They get clear on their non-negotiables.
When it comes to building your business, especially if you’re not doing it full-time yet, you need to understand that when you say YES to something, you’re saying NO to something else.
YES >>> Netflix
NO >>> Your Business
YES >>> Partying
NO >>> Your Business
There’s nothing wrong with any of these two examples. However, if you’re an entrepreneur and you’re not getting the results that you want, maybe it’s to take a look at where you’re spending your time.
Personally, when I started my own business in the Netherlands, I quickly realized that I wanted to do this full-time. I knew for sure that I didn’t want to work for someone else.
So that meant for the first year, I was studying during the weeks and working during the weekends to make extra cash to grow my business.
I wasn’t really doing the things that I loved to do. However, I knew that I was getting into this for the long-run. I was willing to sacrifice my weekends and spend it on my business.
Today, I’m my own boss, I decide my own salary and I spend as much time as I want doing the things that I love.
Nothing of this was possible if I didn’t stay committed and clear on my non-negotiables.
You will never always be motivated. You have to learn to be disciplined.
They take action before being ready
Most of you might be thinking you’re not ready to start your own business because you have a 9-5 job, or maybe you’re a single mom, or maybe you have other businesses that’s taking all of your time.
Usually when someone says that they’re not ready is because they’re waiting on a predictable future so that they can take action.
But waiting until you’re ready is like waiting for the green light to cross the street without even pressing the button.
You have to press the button first, in order to get the green light.
As entrepreneurs, you also need to take action first in order to get the green light.
And what you’ll find behind the action is the feeling of being ready.
The feeling of being ready is a by-product of the action that you take.
I like to tell my students: Courage comes before confidence.
You may not feel completely confident to start your business right now or to put yourself on social media — but you have to have the courage to do it scary, messy, and uncomfortable, so that you can build that confidence.

They stay committed (even when it’s hard).
Commitment is a big word for many people. And when it comes to committing to building your own brand online, most entrepreneurs make the excuse of “I don’t have the time to do this!”.
I get it…
Building a brand online does take time, and it requires your consistency.
But let’s put things into perspective for a minute…
Are you telling me that you have the opportunity to start ANYTHING that you want to do RIGHT NOW on social media… FOR *FREE*… and you’re still complaining?
If you’re telling me that you don’t have the time. Then I don’t think you’re committed enough.

Imagine how much money you can make when more people start looking at your product and services.
