#47 – From a 9-5 Job to a Full-Time Entrepreneur

March 16, 2021
The Steven de Cuba Podcast

Most struggling entrepreneurs don’t take action in their business because they say that “it’s not perfect yet”.

They spend 3 to 6 months in their business trying to have that perfect website, with the perfect logo and the perfect branding colors, only to realize that those are not the primary factor that is going to determine whether someone would invest in your business or not.

Not only is this one of the biggest mistakes that you can make when first starting out, but one of the common mistakes that most entrepreneurs make which creates the feeling of overwhelm.

Because there’s so much to do and no money coming in.

OF COURSE, you’re going to feel overwhelmed.

But here’s the thing: 100% perfect is an illusion.

My version of 100% perfect might be your version of 50% perfect.

My version of 50% perfect might be your version of 100% perfect.

In other words: 100% perfect doesn’t exist.

But here’s another side to perfectionism.

Perfectionism is the fancy name for fear, it is fear in high heels, wearing makeup and red lipstick.

Podcast-Cover-2 #47 - From a 9-5 Job to a Full-Time Entrepreneur Podcast

Most struggling entrepreneurs use perfectionism as an excuse to stay in their comfort zone because they’re too afraid of what might happen if they go all-in with their business.

And right here, I’m the first one to raise my hand and let you know that I’ve used perfectionism as an excuse to stay in my comfort zone.

But in reality, I was just scared.

I remember in January 2020, new years resolution: I was ready to go all-in with my business:

  • I had the full year booked with weddings
  • It was the year that I’d graduate and get my business degree.
  • I was working as the marketing strategist for an agency and I was confident to go all-in with my business.

And then, COVID-19 happened.

In March 2020, when the first wave hit the Netherlands, we went into a lock-down. And in just 2 weeks, I’ve lost everything. All my couples start to reschedule their wedding to 2021 or 2022 and the agency that I was in was also affected that they had to let me go.

The only silver lining: I got my business degree.

But I don’t have a business and I don’t have a job.

And in that moment, fear appeared again.

The same fear that appeared in 2017 when I first started my business in the Netherlands. That same fear appeared back in 2020.

In that moment I’ve realized that fear is inevitable.

Fear will always be there.

When you were a kid you may have had:

  • Fear of the boogie man in the closet.
  • Fear of the not getting what you want for Christmas
  • And maybe right now in this moment you have fear of “what if it doesn’t work for me”

What I’ve learned is that: what you do with fear determines what is possible for you.

In that moment I had to make a choice, I had two choices:

  1. Go all-in with my business and make the best out of it.
  2. Play if safe, look for another job, and wait until COVID passed to then go all-in with my business.

At that moment I remember having so many thoughts in my head and one of them was “I don’t want to be a 90-year-old guy that looks back at his life and regrets everything that he didn’t do”.

And in the same moment, I had to stop myself and say “Steven, who the heck told you you’re going to get to 90-year-old? Who told you that you’re going to be alive next month? Next Week?”

It felt like the biggest breakthrough I had in my life.

COVID, made me realize that we can have our whole life planned out and in just two weeks everything changed.

I chose to go all-in with my business, regardless of the odds stacked against me, regardless of what people thought or said about me.

Let me tell you something, 2020 was my biggest year in business and since the beginning of 2021, I’ve been doubling my income.

Today, I look at fear as:

  • An opportunity for growth
  • An opportunity to ask for help
  • The proof that I’m doing something outside of my comfort zone.

I choose how I look at fear and I don’t let fear determine what is possible for me.

And the same goes to you.

Fear is proof that you’re doing something outside of my comfort zone.

Take a look at Daniela, when she first joined the program, she only had an idea in mind. During our first group coaching call, she told me that she was overwhelmed because she didn’t have a website, logo, or branding colors, and that was holding her back from taking action… she wanted to have it all perfect before taking action.

After 48 hours of our first call, she went and applied the IPB System and made over 1500 euros in sales

I believe the same is possible for you. I want to help you build your brand online and I want to make it happen next week on the 24th and 25th of March 2021.
