#1 – How my dad’s old camera changed my life

The Steven de Cuba Podcast

I remember when my dad bought his new camera, I immediately took the old one. I signed up to the university of Google and Youtube and quickly made that camera my best friend.

In 2012, I had a cousin who was pregnant so I asked her to take her pregnancy photos. She agreed and we spend like 4 hours doing a pregnancy shoot. It was crazy!

I remember using a bedsheet as a white background in my mother’s living room. Then we went to Baby Beach in Aruba to take photos with the sunset.

I was so excited with the results. I started my own Facebook Page and uploaded all my photos there. At that moment, I had no idea I discovered the one thing that will give me life for the rest of my life.

In 2015, I graduated high school but I didn’t know what I wanted to do next. I knew for sure I wanted to study abroad, but I didn’t know where nor what. So, I gave myself one year to figure things out.

In this gap year, I worked as a full-time wedding photographer at different Hotels in Aruba. But, as crazy as it might sound: I got tired of the beach.

Yes, I got tired of the white sandy, crystal clear water, beautiful beach in Aruba.

I wanted more.

In 2016, I moved to The Netherlands to pursue my business degree. Again, I gave myself one year to test the waters and start getting used to my new life in The Netherlands.

This was my first time moving out of my parent’s house. It was my first time living alone. And it was the first time living in The Netherlands. I basically felt like a lost toddler who can’t find his mom at the playground. THAT SCARED.

In 2017, I decided to start my own photography business and one year later I was voted as one of the best wedding photographers in The Hague. My work has been published in different magazines like The Knot, Zankyou, ThePerfectWedding.nl, La Champanera, FOCUS and more. Over the years, and especially in the last few months, a lot of people start reaching out and asking for tips and tricks on building your own business.

I don’t have the answer, because there’s no right answer. Every business is unique and you have to create your own way.

Show up. Share your voice. And stop worrying about what others might think about you.

Let me save you some time, people are going to have an opinion about you whether you follow your dreams, or not. They’re going to have an opinion about you whether you show up, or not. They’re going to have an opinion about you regardless of what you do.

So, why not just follow your dreams and ignore what other people have to say?

My goal in 2020 is to take you on more of behind-the-scenes of being a young entrepreneur and sharing more about my story with you.

I hope to inspire you to do the same thing.

Show up for your dreams, friend. You have a special message that only you can share.
